Youtube - The Swirlies - Sunn

This is the song "Sunn" (yeah, like the amps) from the 1996 album "They Spent Their Wild Youthful Days in the Glittering World of the Salons" by The Swirlies. If you haven't heard these dudes before image My Bloody Valentine smoking lots of pot, cracking jokes and letting loose yet still having unbelievably good hooks, guitar tunings and intricate song structures. I really hate the fact these guys have such a small following considering how solid most of their work is, shit, their remix album "Strictly East Coast Sneaky Flute Music" is even worth checking out.

Text Messaging with Moises.

Karen 11:55 am- Things that have hands: clocks, card players, audience members, -some men.

Moises 11:59 am- ...Faith in friends, German names pronounced with Southern accents, wanting eyes.

Karen 12:01 pm- The twelve tolls of a bell.

Moises 12:07 pm- Hands free foot loose streak without a Care in the world.

Karen- 12:09 pm- Some men!!!

Moises 12:16 pm- All men some of the time, some men all of the time.

Moises 01:32 pm- What about the Upper Hand(s)?

Karen 01:50 pm- And the red-handed.

Moises 02:13 pm- Or, the handful.

Karen 02:22 pm- Not to mention the Roaming hands.

Moises 02:25 pm- ...and the Lands that They roamed.

Moises 03:44 pm- Hey, what ever happened to the Helping hand? I heard that he got out. Somewhere really high up on The map.

Karen 04:05 pm- I heard that too, from the Handiest of sourses.

(Some where in the valley, lies a creek with Jumping Text Message trout. It's true, I have been there. I'll take you next time.)

Moises 10:18 am- Calcu-lust.

Colby 10:26 am- HAHA.I was going to text this morning that algebra can acknowledge the color of a flower. Calculus acknowledges it's shape, and motion too. It's not for the...elite as much as the poet. It has nothing to do with numbers. They are on only for the application of these ideas.

(wow, man.)

Moises: 10:28 am- Man, I wish that my fingers spoke Calculus, so that they (my fingers) could get as close as possible to this pimple right under my nose, and not actually be able to touch it. Ouch equals Empty Square.

(Calculus or not, you get the math. Right? Algebra rhymes with Acid, and Calculus rhymes with Birds. Reader...you rhyme with Time.)

Text Messaging with Moises.

Moises 12:54 am- I watched you sing "He was a friend of mine" in a dream last night.

Jessica 01:04 pm- Wow. That sounds great. How was Love and Haight?

Moises 02:31 pm- It was amazing. I had a sandwich in the fashion of The Golden Gate Bridge, and Genevieve had the Traffic Jam.

Jessica o4:09 pm- Nummers.

(Short and sweet my good man/woman. My my my, another slice of textullar pie, please!)

SICK BURN: CLUSTER / tussle / white rainbow @ GAMH

SUNDAY 5/25/08

CLUSTER

with

WHITE RAINBOW

TUSSLE

white rainbow

tussle gear

steering wheel of the omniscient Odin

AC's visuals

gaunt navigator, the Mobius himself

cluster

the nature of the layout at GAMH doesn't lend itself easily to analyzing gear; very dim lighting, high stage, musicians set far back, no-flash photo policy. regardless:

WHITE RAINBOW

i walked into this set with 3/4's the room empty and the lights barely dimmed to what i thought was a dj but upon closer inspection realized the Portland, OR djin had actually already begun his set. seemed he wasn't concerned with pushing the mammoth speaker array of the GAMH, a shame as his records are incredibly lush and symphonic; output was far too quiet and lacking in low end. i couldn't recognize any compositions off PRISM OF ETERNAL NOW, his latest record. more geared into an improv nu-trance realm, still very enjoyable results but too muted. BOSS giga delay, moogerfooger [ murf? ], some kind of drum machine with an lcd display, stratocaster guitar, vocal mic, boss flanger.

TUSSLE

began without introduction and not a single word uttered throughout the set. two drummer staple included but this time with dude from THE VANISHING and BRONZE on a kit. jazz bass, ampeg 4x10 [ wayyyy to quiet/trebly for me ] kicks were incredibly prominent and thumping in the mix, crucial to their motorik oriented dance efforts. synths churned out discordant stabs with cat & mouse pawing, filling in where needed. a strong set without many risks or enthusiasm.

CLUSTER

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cluster_%28band%29

Dieter Mobius and Han Joachim Rodelius are two pilots of the cosmiche [ or roughly: german synthesizer anthems of the 70's ] duo Cluster, who also split minds wide in the more melodic oriented HARMONIA of which Brian Eno also collaborated with.

i won't even attempt to detail what equipment the spirits manipulated [dudes been at this for 30+ yrs, the gear's gonna be exotic ] , but what did strike me is the lack of any visible keyboard synths. the platform was a barebones rig of what i imagine were a few consoles of some kind of patch synthesis variety, though i could make out one discernible keyboard towards the end as a heartbreaking piano melody ended the second encore of the set. easily flooding the low end threshold of the house system, the volume and reverberations were absolutely delectable to all senses, unfortunately 35% of the crowd appeared disinterested enough in massive cascading waves of phantasmal drone and ambient suites, as they bantered through most of the set. the visual accompaniment by shaman Allison Childs shrouded the event in a very agreeable wigwam of line graph rainbow and shimmering static fields. true mind zoo.

SICK BURN: Clipd Beaks @ Million Fishes

Sat 5/17/08
i had the pleasure of working sound for this show as my PA was borrowed, which explains the lack of more precise photographs of gear, but anyway....
KKKlipd Beaks are a thorny delicacy, de psych punx. where many bands cordon their members to honing a single trade, c-beaks shiva the sound into a three piece of deception. this show was their first since losing their guitar player, whereas previous they were a foursome of skittering, crunchy, layercake grooves, this time they opted for a more direct set by way of improv. normally 'improv' and 'direct' contradict each other in the same sentence, but it was clear de Beakz have been psionic brudders for long enough to know which movements would trigger shifts in song structure without even looking at each other - that is - playing to the crowd. Scott - the bass and keyboard player informed me the first 3 minutes were a previous song and the rest deviated into complete virginal navigation.
the singer mangled two microphones, one dry and EQ'ed flat which ran into my PA and used for howls, and a second through a boss loopstation & ibanez delay [ DE7 i think ]. throughout the show he'd stack loops of his voice at different moments to create cascading waves of melody. the tone of his voice and delivery reminded me a bit of UNWOUND's last album. the effected mic was going through a surprisingly loud tiny marshall practice amp lain flat on the floor facing upward to create a yummy feedback when not in use, and suffered the blare of a trumpet as well. he dug out a kickdrum, laid it facing at an angle on the floor, and beat it feverishly towards the end of the set.
as for a guitar, a battered strat without any effects i could see, going through what i think was a roland keyboard amp for a more muscular sound.
the bass/synths used appeared to be a vintage roland of some make, and jazz bass, both through what appeared to be separate pairs of ampeg 2x12's which both thundered thick n throbby through the midsized wood floor hall. the bass ran through a solid state head of unknown origin. sadly i couldn't make out the couple of pedals he used on what seemed like his synth.
as for the drums, they were drumbly & direct in approach. there was also weed. whadoyouwant?
easily one of my favorite current acts, de clipdbkz.

SICK BURN: Fantastic Magic - Knock Out 15/5/08

Fantastic Magic - Knock Out 15/5/08
http://www.myspace.com/fantasticmagic

Over all the sound was pretty chill and well rounded from these neo hippie Manson family collective chanting revivalists. As far as what they were using the set up was minimal, with hardly any percussion at all. It seemed like most of the interesting sounds were coming from the miscellaneous hairy man in the back who manned up the harmonium, horn, finger cymbals and an Indian sounding giant drum. The two guitar players didn't really seems to be using pedals at all mostly amp effects and were both using crate combo amps, that surprisingly sounded good. The acoustic guitar player had some Ibanez guitar that he strummed what seemed to be the same couple of chords the entire show and threw in some warbled psych vox in here and there. The electric mandolin(unknown brand)/electric guitar(Epiphone Dot Electric?) player had a sweet sounding girl voice, used a slide on a track, some sorta talk box wah effect on another track. Of course he was using shit tons of reverb, which always sounds good and the mandolin brother took off his shoes mid point which mysteriously seemed to produce some mid set airborne hallucinogen. it was funny.
